North Carolina Statistics

  • Every five minutes a child is abused or neglected in North Carolina.
  • In 2011, Child Advocacy Centers (23) in North Carolina, such as Pat’s Place, investigated 6,463 new child abuse cases (a 26% increase over 2010). Of those, 79% of the cases involved sexual abuse. (Other types of abuse were: physical abuse, neglect, witness to violence, and drug endangerment.)
  • The total number of alleged offenders was 4,911. Of those, the relationship to the child was: 
    • Parent – 28%
    • Step-parent – 8%
    • Other relative – 23%
    • Parent’s boyfriend or girlfriend – 10%
    • Other known person – 26%
    • A stranger – 5%
  • The race or ethnicity of the children were: 
    • White/Caucasian – 57%
    • Black/African American – 23%
    • Hispanic/Latino – 8.5%
    • Other – 8.5%
    • Undisclosed – 3%


Mecklenburg County Statistics

  • During 2013-2014 fiscal year, 14,401 children were reported abused or neglected in Mecklenburg County.  Of those reported, 10,048 cases were accepted for investigation and 1,952 were substantiated to recieve services.
